John Fortson, an award-winning writer, director, and actor, was born on November 6th near Jacksonville, Florida, USA. His film directorial debut, Rated (2016), which he wrote and starred in alongside Christie Lynn Smith and Abby Ryder Fortson, achieved 60 Official Selections worldwide and won 21 awards, including 14 Best Short Film prizes at festivals such as The Savannah Film Festival, DC Shorts, Sonoma International Film Fest, and Big Island Film Festival. He also received two Best Director nominations. His films have screened at prestigious festivals including Palm Springs International Shortfest, Rhode Island International Film Fest, Heartland Film Festival, Woodstock Film Festival, and Short Shorts Japan. John has completed the script for a feature film adaptation of Rated.
John Fortson’s diverse film career spans dramas and comedies. He starred in the emotional series Urban Nightmares (2017) as a man determined to bring back his wife and son after a tragic accident. In Agapé (2014), he played a supernatural man fighting passionately for his true love, opposite Kathleen Rose Perkins. For Spacechild (2011), John transformed physically, growing a beard and losing weight to portray an astronaut haunted by his solitary 20-year mission. In Motel Blues (2015), he learned guitar to portray a young, edgy Bruce Springsteen as his career rises. In Happy and You Know It (2013), he played a supportive husband to his overwhelmed pregnant wife.
John earned a Best Actor nomination for his Cary Grant-inspired role in Definite Maybe (2002). His roles include playing James Spader in My Big Fat Independent Movie (2005), the supportive brother in Lather. Rinse. Repeat. (2002) alongside Marshall Bell and Golden Globe nominee Troy Garity, a meth addict saved by Maura Tierney in ER (1994), and appearances opposite Jessica Biel in 7th Heaven (1996) and in the relationship drama Magnetic Poles (2006), a Sundance Festival selection.
He wrote, produced, and starred in two acclaimed one-person shows, including Loveswell, which ran for over three years in Los Angeles. John has also been invited to write and perform for Transparent (2014) creator Joey Soloway’s show SitNSpin, at LA's MOCA Museum, and the LA Comedy Festival.
John is married to actress Christie Lynn Smith, and together they have two children: actress Abby Ryder Fortson, born in 2008, and their son Joshua Fortson, born in 2012. He enjoys surfing, traveling, and supporting various charitable causes.
