Daniel Blake Smith, an Emmy award-winning filmmaker and writer, wrote and produced the acclaimed feature film Mr. Wonderful (Indie Rights, 2026), a drama starring Hollywood legend Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), now streaming on Prime Video and other digital platforms. He co-wrote the film adaptation of the New York Times bestseller Embraced by the Light, which will be produced by Hollywood icon Ridley Scott. Smith also co-wrote and helped produce the crime thriller Texas Heart (Indie Rights, 2016), featuring John Savage (The Deer Hunter) and Lin Shaye (Insidious), available on Amazon and other digital platforms. He has several feature scripts in development, including Blood Born, a thriller, and Love & Money, based on his novel Crazy Love (2019).
Smith’s portfolio of written and produced works spans feature narrative films and documentaries, including the Emmy-nominated February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four, which aired on PBS’s Independent Lens. He also wrote the acclaimed, award-winning feature documentary Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy, hosted by Cherokee actor Wes Studi and narrated by James Earl Jones; Black Indians: An American Story, also narrated by James Earl Jones; and Terror of the Soul: Edgar Allan Poe, a docudrama starring Treat Williams and John Heard, with music by Philip Glass. Additionally, he wrote and produced feature documentaries Envisioning Home, about two visionaries in St. Louis public housing (which premiered at the St. Louis International Film Festival and is available on Amazon), and Impact: After the Crash, covering the deadliest drunk-driving crash in U.S. history, an official selection of the St. Louis International Film Festival, available on Amazon Prime (Indie Rights, 2017).
Holding a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Virginia and having taught at the University of Kentucky, Smith is the author of four books on American history, including the award-winning An American Betrayal: Cherokee Patriots and the Trail of Tears (Henry Holt, 2011), The Shipwreck That Saved Jamestown (Henry Holt, 2008), and Our Family Dreams: The Fletchers’ Adventures in 19th Century America (St. Martin’s Press, 2016). His latest book, RUN: The Wilmot Collins Story, is set for release in October. A native Texan, Smith currently resides in St. Louis, Missouri.
