Emmy-nominated writer and director Geeta Vasant Patel is celebrated for her innovative and unconventional filmmaking style that encompasses both drama and comedy. In 2024, Patel is set to lead several high-profile projects, establishing her as one of the most closely watched directors in the entertainment industry. She will return to direct and executive produce season two of Max’s Golden Globe and Emmy-winning fantasy/drama series "The House of the Dragon," starring Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy, premiering Sunday, June 16. Patel will direct episode 3 and the season two finale, following her work on “The Lord of the Tides” (episode 8, season 1) in 2022.
In television, Patel also serves as Executive Producer and Pilot Director for Hulu’s limited series "Under the Bridge," starring Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough. "Under the Bridge," along with Patel’s contributions, received a nomination for Breakthrough Limited Series at the inaugural 2024 Gotham TV Awards.
Recent directing credits include Disney+’s "Ahsoka," Starz’s "P-Valley," and multiple episodes of Hulu’s acclaimed series "The Great," starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Patel has also directed episodes of "The Magicians," "The Runaways," "Sweetbitter," "Dead to Me," "Chambers," "Santa Clarita Diet," "The Mindy Project," "Atypical," "Fresh off the Boat," and five episodes of the comedy series "Superstore."
In 2014, Patel and her brother received international acclaim for their romantic comedy "Meet The Patels," which they co-directed, wrote, edited, and produced. The film explored cultural identity and matrimonial expectations within their Indian-American family and premiered to widespread critical praise. Variety described it as "sharp" and "riotously funny," while The Hollywood Reporter called it "the funniest doc I’ve seen in years and a sure-fire Oscar contender." "Meet The Patels" was nominated for Outstanding Arts & Culture Documentary at the 2017 News & Documentary Emmy Awards, nominated for the Viewfinders Grand Jury Prize at DOC NYC, and won Best Documentary Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Patel also served as cinematographer, reinforcing her multifaceted approach to filmmaking.
Patel began her film career as an associate screenwriter on major studio projects across all production phases, collaborating with Disney, Universal Pictures, ABC, NBC, and Twentieth Century Fox on films including "The Fast and the Furious" and "Blue Crush." Her directorial debut, the documentary "Project Kashmir," a war thriller examining geopolitical tensions in Kashmir, earned her recognition. Produced by the Sundance Documentary Fund, screened at the Sundance Film Festival, and garnering directing fellowships from the Sundance and Tribeca Institutes, the film marked her emergence as a director.
A Duke University graduate with a degree in Comparative Area Studies, Patel’s expertise in languages and global human geography informs her storytelling with rich cultural and social insights. While studying in Berlin, filmmaker Anthony Minghella inspired her pursuit of a storytelling career. Beyond directing, Patel has acted as a Visiting Artist in countries including Belarus, Turkey, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Japan through the U.S. State Department’s film diplomacy program. This work highlights her dedication to cross-cultural exchange and solidifies her standing as a global storyteller.
