Sónia Balacó gained fame in Portugal at 15 by securing a leading role in the prime-time TV series "Jornalistas," establishing a career that spans award-winning films, television, and theatre.
Born in Peniche, Portugal, Sónia developed a passion for poetry, theatre, and acting early on, deciding at age 12 to pursue acting and joining a local theatre group.
Her striking appearance led her to start modeling at 14, working on runways, editorials, and commercials, including a cover shoot for L'Uomo Vogue by Mario Testino. Around this time, she also landed her first television role.
She later earned a BA in Performing Arts from the University of Lisbon. Between 2008 and 2012, she lived in London, where she studied acting, refined her accents, and performed in fringe theatre and independent films.
In 2011, she starred in the acclaimed comedy series 'Último a Sair,' a mock reality show in which she portrayed a caricature of herself, receiving praise from both audiences and critics. She then took a lead role in the TV movie 'E Depois Matei-o,' which won the 2013 Prix Italia for Best TV Fiction, and was a regular cast member on the cult series 'Os Filhos do Rock.'
From 2014 to 2015, she played the lead role in the TV series 'Água de Mar' and starred in the short film 'Freud und Friends,' directed by award-winning filmmaker Gabriel Abrantes, which competed at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival.
Her recent feature films include 'Moral Order' (2020), directed by Mário Barroso and starring Maria de Medeiros, and 'Amelia's Children' (2023), directed by Gabriel Abrantes.
