Mark Wing-Davey gained recognition in the United States with his acclaimed 1992 production of Caryl Churchill's Mad Forest at New York Theatre Workshop. Since then, he has worked extensively in New York City with institutions such as NYTW, Manhattan Theatre Club, Lincoln Center, Playwrights Horizons, LAByrinth, and the Public Theater, where he directed Troilus and Cressida and Henry V in Central Park. He also directed Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Yale Repertory Theatre, and for Epic Theater in a site-specific staging at Brooklyn's Irondale Center.
His recent work includes Molière's School for Wives at Two River Theater in New Jersey and Pericles, his fifth production for Berkeley Repertory Theatre, following 36 Views, The Life of Galileo, The Beaux' Stratagem, and Mad Forest. He directed a highly praised Angels in America for ACT. His U.S. and international credits encompass new and classic plays at ART, Cincinnati Playhouse, La Jolla Playhouse, Mark Taper Forum, McCarter Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Playmaker's Repertory, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, London's Royal Court Theatre, National Theatre, the Edinburgh Festival, as well as musicals in the West End and Australia.
Dedicating much of his career to new play development, he has directed works by Caryl Churchill, Sarah Ruhl, Amy Freed, Naomi Iizuka, Jose Rivera, Anna Deavere Smith, Tony Kushner, and Craig Lucas, among others. His recent projects include the world premiere of Brett C. Leonard's Unconditional for LAByrinth Theater Company, Craig Lucas's The Singing Forest at the Public Theater, and workshops of two musicals by Brett C. Leonard, Stephen Adly Guirgis's Untitled Ass Play, and Carson Kreitzer's Behind The Eye, a play about photographer Lee Miller, which he directed in its Cincinnati premiere in April 2011.
In summer 2011, he directed Keith Reddin's new play Acquainted With The Night at the O'Neill Playwrights Conference. In 2012, he directed three world premieres: KMT, an adaptation by Keith Reddin and Carol Rocamora of Sukhovo-Kobylin's Russian Trilogy at NYU; Mona Mansour's The Hour of Feeling for the Louisville Humana New Play Festival; and Brett C. Leonard's Ninth and Joanie for LAByrinth in New York. In 2016, he worked on Jean Genet's The Screens in a new translation by Caryl Churchill.
In June 2012, he embarked on a six-week national UK tour playing the role he originated—Zaphod Beeblebrox—in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show Live on Stage, which became a surprising hit, frequently performing to audiences of 2,500 or more.
Wing-Davey is an Arts Professor and Chair of Graduate Acting at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where in September 2010 he premiered Tony Kushner's music theater work The Henry Box Brown Play. He also directed the premiere of Adam Rapp's The Eggs: A Fantasy of Love and Death in the Age of Amelioration, and in 2012 staged Restoration, a rarely performed music theater piece by Edward Bond with new music by Pete Atkin. Recently, he completed a dual production of Tracy Letts's translation of Chekhov's Three Sisters, set in 1901 and 1988. He is currently developing a new workshop-based piece with Sarah Ruhl, scheduled for production in fall 2015.
