Adonis Kyrou was a Greek filmmaker, screenwriter, author, critic, and film theorist whose career combined political experience, artistic practice, and intellectual inquiry, earning him lasting recognition as a key international writer on surrealism in cinema. Raised in Athens, he became politically active early on and participated in the resistance during the Occupation, experiences that shaped his worldview and the inquisitive spirit that defined his work. After leaving Greece for Paris, he studied literature and journalism while writing on cultural topics under a pseudonym, gradually gaining prominence in European artistic and critical circles. There, he forged close connections with leading surrealists, including André Breton, and deeply engaged with the ideas central to his life's work. While respected as a critic and theorist, Kyrou was also an active filmmaker; his most notable film, To bloko (1965), received special mention at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and remains his most recognized directorial work. His greatest impact, however, was through his writing, particularly the seminal book Surrealism in Cinema, alongside a wider body of work exploring the interplay of image, imagination, politics, and the subconscious. Through his books, criticism, and films, Kyrou became a distinctive cultural figure whose influence extended well beyond Greece, shaping international understanding of surrealist cinema.
