A native of Seattle, Washington, Karr earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington State University. The vibrant Seattle rock scene provided early inspiration for his photography.
After relocating to Los Angeles to study at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Karr was drawn away from academia by the unique and unconventional characters he encountered in the city’s depths. By gaining their trust, he captured their individuality with a highly original technique, producing shockingly beautiful work that marked the arrival of a significant new artist in photography.
Fascinated by the possibilities of motion pictures, Karr expanded into directing music videos. His early success led to directing Marilyn Manson’s “Sweet Dreams,” a provocative video that quickly drew widespread commercial attention and propelled both Manson and Karr to the forefront of the rock visual scene. This success opened doors to collaborations with other top artists. After representation by RSA and A Band Apart, Karr co-founded the Los Angeles-based commercial and music video production company The Mine LLC in 2000.
Continuously inspired by reality, Karr embraces adventurous settings for his projects. His recent work has taken him to diverse locations such as the Amazon Rainforest and the chilly waters of South Australia to film the Great White Shark.
