Steve Taylor was born in Brawley, California, and grew up in Denver, Colorado. He studied music, filmmaking, and acting at the University of Colorado in Boulder before launching a recording career spanning several decades, earning him two Grammy nominations for "Meltdown" and "Squint." He made history as the only artist to win Billboard Music Video Awards twice for self-directed music videos. Taylor also led the MCA-signed alternative rock band Chagall Guevara, which debuted on the soundtrack of the film "Pump Up The Volume." Among his numerous music video directing credits, his most notable work is the Francois Truffaut-inspired video filmed in Paris for Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me." He also directed and starred in the award-winning long-form video "Squint: Movies From The Soundtrack," shot on 35mm film across ten countries including Vietnam, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.
Before making his first feature film, Taylor studied the Meisner technique for two years under acting coach Bill Feheely. His writing and directing credits include "The Second Chance" for Sony and "Blue Like Jazz," adapted from Donald Miller’s New York Times bestselling memoir, which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival and won the 2013 Wilbur Award for Best Feature Film, joining previous recipients such as "Schindler's List," "Dead Man Walking," and "The Help." He is also producing two upcoming features: "Sun Moon" for Sony Affirm, filmed in Taiwan, and "Sketch," starring two-time Emmy winner Tony Hale of "Arrested Development" and "Veep," which is set to premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Steve serves as Filmmaker-In-Residence at Lipscomb University, where he earned his MFA in Film and Creative Media. He lives in Nashville with his wife, artist D.L. Taylor, and their daughter.
