In 2014, the world was introduced to a new talent: Martin Dubreuil. He co-starred alongside Hadas Yaron in Maxime Giroux’s heartfelt romance, Félix and Meira (2014). Portraying Félix, a man in his early forties who had dropped out of society, Dubreuil fully embodied the role, captivating audiences worldwide who soon saw him through Meira’s eyes. Unknown to the global audience? Perhaps. But in Quebec, where he was born in 1976, he is well-known both as an actor and as a member of the band The Breastfeeders. Fans of the band would recognize the eccentric, flamboyant tambourine player and occasional vocalist—Martin Dubreuil performing under the stage name Johnny Malodor.
Inspired to become an actor at 16 after watching Robert De Niro in Raging Bull (1980), Dubreuil has been highly active in film. He has appeared in numerous productions, mostly shorts rather than feature films. Yet, his dedication to his craft means he never refuses a project that interests him, regardless of the role’s size, payment, or length of the film. For the first six years of his career, he acted exclusively in student films, which, though little seen, helped him learn his craft.
Often portraying intense, out-of-sync characters on screen, Dubreuil usually takes on roles as punks, junkies, tough guys, or brutes. He frequently collaborates with prominent Quebec filmmakers such as Pierre Falardeau (Elvis Gratton II: Miracle à Memphis (1999), February 15, 1839 (2001), Elvis Gratton 3: Le retour d'Elvis Wong (2004)), Eric Tessier (Evil Words (2003)), Patrick Huard (The 3 L'il Pigs (2007)), and Yves Christian Fournier (Everything Is Fine (2008)). Before Félix and Meira, he had already worked with Maxime Giroux six times. This film marked a significant turning point in Dubreuil’s career, offering him international exposure and the chance to portray a gentler character—closer to his true self—which showcased his full range of talent.
