Armando Anthony Corea, known as Chick Corea, was born on June 12, 1941, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA. He began piano lessons at the age of four. His professional career started with Cab Calloway, followed by performances with the bands of Mongo Santamaria, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, flutist Herbie Mann, and saxophonist Stan Getz. Corea made his debut as a bandleader with the album 'Tones for Joan's Bones' in 1966. In 1967, he accompanied Sarah Vaughan and also played with Dizzy Gillespie. Between 1968 and 1970, he was the pianist and keyboardist for Miles Davis, contributing to five albums and numerous live shows, including the August 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in England, documented in Murray Lerner's film Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue (2004).
Widely regarded as one of the most prolific composers and recording artists of the 20th century, Corea's albums such as 'Return to Forever' (1972), 'Light as a Feather' (1972), 'Hymn to the Seventh Galaxy' (1973), and the Grammy-winning 'Romantic Warrior' (1976) helped shape the jazz-rock genre. He was a versatile musician, exploring styles from classical piano concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to acoustic and electronic fusion, crossing genres and styles. In the 1980s and 1990s, he performed and recorded with his Akoustic Band and Elektric Band. Additionally, he composed several film scores and other commissioned works. Corea earned acclaim for his piano virtuosity and innovative compositions.
Throughout his career, Chick Corea received nine Grammy Awards. His most famous composition, "Spain," has been widely performed and recorded by musicians worldwide. He led his own band and performed over 100 live concerts annually.
