Diana Lin (Xiaojie Lin) is a Chinese-Australian actress who was raised in a strict family in mainland China. From an early age, Diana demonstrated exceptional performance abilities, skillfully imitating various characters and voices. She frequently entertained friends and family at gatherings. Recognizing her passion for performing and her remarkable voice, her parents enrolled her in private singing lessons and martial arts training.
At 14, Diana was selected by the Chinese Beijing Opera Company to train as a professional traditional Chinese opera singer. Five years of rigorous physical, vocal, and performance training built a solid foundation for her diverse talents and boosted her self-confidence. This experience motivated her to pursue her career ambitions and embrace future challenges. Diana traveled two and a half days by train to audition at the prestigious Shanghai Theatre Academy. Four years later, she graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts.
Diana has appeared in numerous films, television series, and Chinese operas, portraying many well-known roles. In 1986, she portrayed Bai Yin, a deeply rooted country woman, in the film "Xiang Min." Her outstanding performance and flawless transformation earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the esteemed China Golden Rooster Awards. She became known in the industry as the "Asian Meryl Streep."
In the early 1990s, Diana immigrated to Australia and adapted her career for the Western market. In 1994, she starred in Tony Ayres’s TV series "Under the Skin," which garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Australian Film Institute Awards. After taking a break from acting to raise a family and manage a business, Diana resumed her acting career in 2015. Since then, she has worked across Australia, China, and the US in numerous feature films, TV series, and theatre productions.
As a first-generation adult immigrant, Diana has faced many challenges. She has accumulated a wealth of life experiences and continues to grow and elevate her craft. Every character she portrays leaves a lasting impression and receives high praise from colleagues and industry professionals.
Diana’s most recent feature film, "The Farewell," co-starring Awkwafina, was one of the standout films at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Diana portrayed Awkwafina’s emotionally reserved mother. The film was scheduled for release in the US by A24 in July 2019.
