Randy Oglesby has guest-starred in numerous episodic television shows, including every David E. Kelley series, and appeared in Star Trek from The Next Generation to Enterprise. His recent recurring roles include parts in Godless, Strange Angels, Sharp Objects, and most recently, he plays President Jim Bragg in the Apple TV series For All Mankind. Some of his favorite film roles include Pale Rider, Independence Day, Pearl Harbor, The Lone Ranger, Path to War, Patch Adams, Liar Liar, and The Island.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Randy attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he began studying theatre. After leaving school to pursue acting, he took on a wide range of unusual jobs that contributed to his character development: scrub assistant in surgery, waiter, singing bartender, hod carrier, starting and exercising thoroughbred racehorses, working in a cement batching company, a hide factory, pool hall rack boy, cutting and selling firewood, training polo ponies, driving a cab, and bicycle messenger in New York while studying acting with Julie Bovasso. Eventually, he moved to San Francisco to continue his studies at the American Conservatory Theatre (A.C.T.). After two years of training, he joined A.C.T.’s acting company, performing in forty plays over seven years, including Romeo & Juliet, The Little Foxes, Ibsen’s Ghosts, and O’Neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra.
He later relocated to Los Angeles, becoming a founding member of the Pacific Resident Theatre, where he acted, wrote, directed, and produced plays while also starting his work in film and television. Randy continued performing on prominent stages, appearing in seven plays at the Mark Taper Forum, as well as at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, the Old Globe in San Diego, Intiman Theatre in Seattle, Denver Repertory Theatre, and the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. He also appeared in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Kentucky Cycle, which premiered at the Intiman Theatre, then moved to the Mark Taper Forum where it won the Pulitzer, before playing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Theatre on Broadway.
He holds the unique distinction of having played more characters—seven—in Star Trek than anyone else. Recently, he has had recurring roles in Godless, Strange Angels, Sharp Objects, and currently portrays Vice President Jim Bragg in For All Mankind, with plans to return as President Jim Bragg.
Randy lives in Los Angeles with his wife, two daughters, a grandson, two dogs, and a large brown thoroughbred gelding. In recent years, he has embraced his identity as both a Westerner and a Californian. His advice is simple: always tell the truth, because it’s a safe bet, keep your fingers crossed for a bit of luck, and maybe, just maybe, things will work out.
