Sonya Eddy, originally from Concord, California, graduated from the University of California, Davis, where she nurtured her passion for acting alongside her academic pursuits. Her stage career began with the West Coast premiere of Zora, Is My Name!, by renowned actress and playwright Ruby Dee. In this production, Sonya took on multiple roles, including the memorable Big Sweet, a bold and lively blues singer who was a favorite of Ruby Dee. She expanded her theatrical experience with performances as the Courtesan in Comedy of Errors, along with roles in The Crucible, Pericles, and the Witch in Into the Woods. Her powerful portrayal of Bloody Mary in South Pacific earned her an Arty Award.
Throughout a successful career spanning over a decade in Los Angeles, Sonya became a well-known and cherished character actress on television. She held recurring and guest roles on popular series such as ER, Joan of Arcadia, Seinfeld, The Drew Carey Show, Everybody Hates Chris, Malcolm in the Middle, Reba, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Strong Medicine, Still Standing, The Hughleys, and many others. Notably, she was the only actor to be cast twice on ER.
Sonya also starred opposite James Earl Jones in the Hallmark Hall of Fame film The Reading Room, was a series regular on Martin Short’s Primetime Glick, and appeared on stage in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with John Goodman and Brenda Fricker at Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse.
She was perhaps best known and most loved for her long-standing role as Epiphany Johnson, the sharp, compassionate, and no-nonsense head nurse on General Hospital, a character she also portrayed in the primetime spinoff General Hospital Night Shift.
Her film work demonstrated her wide-ranging talent, with roles in Coach Carter alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Bad News Bears opposite Billy Bob Thornton, Barbershop, Daddy Day Care, Matchstick Men, Surviving Christmas, and Year of the Dog starring Molly Shannon and Peter Sarsgaard.
In addition to acting, Sonya was a skilled improvisational and sketch performer, a vocalist with an impressive range from second soprano to first tenor, and a sought-after voice-over artist. Her talent also made her a familiar presence in numerous national commercial campaigns throughout her career.
Beyond her on-camera work, Sonya co-founded Eddy Ford Entertainment, a television and production company, and Eddy Ford Beverly Hills, a lifestyle brand, alongside her longtime creative and producing partner, Tyler Ford.
