Orsi Nagypal is a Hungarian screenwriter and film director active since 2011, creating features and TV shows for HBO Europe, Lionsgate and MGM+, Syfy and CW USA, and Beta Film Europe. She has directed over 100 episodes across drama, fantasy, rom-com, and satire series, serving as lead director for 52 episodes.
Her most recent project led her to the Sherwood forests to direct Sean Bean and Connie Nielsen in the latest Robin Hood adaptation for Lionsgate/MGM+.
From 2022 to 2025, she co-executive produced and directed four episodes of "Rise of the Raven," a multilingual, action-packed period drama about 15th-century Hungarian war hero Hunyadi. This international co-production involved Canada's Serendipity Point, Hungary's NFI, and Beta Film. With a EUR 60 million budget, the series premiered at MIPCOM Cannes 2024 to critical acclaim, setting Hungarian television viewership records. It was sold to numerous countries worldwide in 2025 and competed at TIFF 2025.
Her debut feature film, "Nyitva / Open," a sexual dramedy exploring monogamy, premiered at the Montreal International Film Festival in 2018 and was released in Hungarian cinemas that October.
Between 2019 and 2021, she directed the US indie dystopian drama "The Deal," produced by Dean Devlin.
From 2010 to 2015, she wrote and directed four short fiction films screened at numerous international festivals, including Clermont-Ferrand, earning awards globally. During this period, she participated in various international screenwriting workshops and markets such as Binger, Sources2, Ekran, Berlinale Talents, and Midpoint.
Her work focuses on everyday heroes, human sexuality, strong and complex female characters, and individuals discovering their true selves amid societal pressures. She enjoys blending humor with drama, the provocative with the ordinary, and lust with awkwardness—reflecting life's complexities.
Additionally, she is the lead singer and guitarist of the female punk and hip-hop band The PinUps.
