His stepfather served as a chief petty officer in the Navy. He grew up in Neustadt, Holstein, spending his childhood and youth there. After completing secondary school, he attended vocational school before transferring to technical high school, where he earned his technical diploma. He then studied music and mathematics at the University of Education for five semesters but left without graduating. From 1982 to 1985, he trained at the Kiel Drama School. Following this, Prahl worked as a theater actor at the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater, as well as in touring theater and various other venues. In the early 1990s, he relocated to Berlin, securing roles at the Renaissance Theater, the GRIPS Theater, and the Kammerspiele of the German Theater.
Prahl later transitioned to film and television. His first TV role came in 1994 with the series Bella Block. Beginning in 1999, he developed a close working relationship with director Andreas Dresen after starring as a police officer in the acclaimed episodic film Nachtgestalten. He also appeared in Dresen's productions Halbe Stapel (2002) and Willenbrock (2004), portraying a betrayed husband and a cunning used car dealer, respectively. For his role in Halbe Stapel, he received the Bavarian Film Prize. In 2002, he played a German sergeant in the Holocaust drama The Pianist, directed by the renowned Roman Polanski. Axel Prahl is widely recognized for his versatility among audiences.
He expertly portrays a range of characters, from comedic to tragic. His notable performances include roles as ordinary individuals and narrow-minded scoundrels, such as the vengeful district leader Eddy in the TV production Hope Dies Last (2002), a miner in the award-winning TV drama Das Miracle of Lengende (2003), and vacuum cleaner salesman Rolf Kubicek in the film Befreite Zone (2004). For his outstanding performance in Hope Dies Last, he was again honored with the Adolf Grimme Prize. In 2006, Prahl appeared as a representative in the music video for "If it happens" by We Are Heroes.
Since 2002, Axel Prahl has been well known to a broad TV audience as Chief Inspector Frank Thiel from Münster in the international television series Tatort. In 2011, after 12 years of marriage and fathering twins, he separated from his second wife. He then moved from Marienwerder in Brandenburg back to Berlin.
