John Terry is an English professional football coach and former centre back. He previously captained Chelsea F.C., the England national team, and Aston Villa F.C., where he also served as assistant head coach.
Known for his strength, tenacity, commanding presence, and physicality, Terry excelled in aerial duels and was recognized for his aggressive tackling, positioning, leadership, and game intelligence. He is regarded as one of the greatest central defenders of his era. Terry received the UEFA Club Defender of the Year award in 2005, 2008, and 2009, was named PFA Players' Player of the Year in 2005, and was selected for the FIFPro World XI five years in a row from 2005 to 2009. He was the only English player included in the 2006 FIFA World Cup all-star team.
As Chelsea's most successful captain, Terry led the club to five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Europa League, and one UEFA Champions League. He is among five players with over 500 appearances for Chelsea and holds the record as the club's highest-scoring defender. In 2007, he became the first captain to lift the FA Cup at the new Wembley Stadium during Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Manchester United and was also the first player to score an international goal there, heading in England’s equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Brazil. In his final season at Chelsea in 2017, he became the first player to captain a team to five Premier League titles.
After leaving Chelsea, Terry played one season with Aston Villa in the EFL Championship before retiring, having lost the 2018 Championship play-off final. He returned to Aston Villa months later as part of Dean Smith's coaching staff, helping the team win the 2019 Championship play-off final and secure promotion to the Premier League.
