Franz Stepan is a German producer, trained theatre and film director, documentary filmmaker, and author of approximately 60 TV dramas. Coming from a family with roots in opera, radio, and television, he began working at Bayerischer Rundfunk (public service broadcasting) at age 15 as an actor and assistant director. After completing his A-Levels, he pursued a career as a freelance writer, director, and TV producer for various stations (including BR, NDR, WDR, ZDF) and directed for multiple theatre companies.
In 1980, he founded Stepan Film & Video, serving as managing director with a focus on TV documentaries, automotive, and industrial corporate films. The company was renamed TVT creative media in 1984. In 2009, TVT became part of the rt1. media group. Franz Stepan has directed and filmed over 700 corporate films and numerous documentaries worldwide.
Over the years, he has received multiple awards, including the Gold World Medal in 1999 at The New York Festivals for "BMW - Moving into the Future" (author, director, producer), the Gold World Medal and Deutscher Wirtschaftsfilmpreis 2009 (Best Picture) for "250 Years MAN" (producer and co-author), as well as various honors at the ITVA Award, the Otto Car Award, and the World Media Festival.
