Educated as a lawyer with an MBA, Juan de Dios Larraín founded in 2004, along with his brother, filmmaker and producer, Pablo Larraín, the Chilean production company Fabula, responsible for twenty-four films. Including one Oscar win for Best Foreign Language Film category (2018), for A Fantastic Woman, directed by Sebastián Lelio.
In 2012, he produced the first Chilean film Oscar Nominated No, directed by Pablo Larraín, starring Gael García Bernal.
In 2015, he produced The Club, directed by Pablo Larraín and premiered at Berlinale, where the film won the Silver Bear for Special Jury Prize, and was Golden Globe nominated as the Best Non-English Language Film.
In 2016 Juan de Dios premiered Neruda, a film directed by Pablo Larraín, starring Gael García Bernal, Luis Gnecco and Mercedes Morán, his second Golden Globe nominated film. After Neruda, he premiered Jackie at Venice Film Festival, also directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Natalie Portman.
In 2018 he premiered Sebastián Lelio's remake film Gloria, starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro in Toronto International Film Festival. He also produced the original version of Gloria, also directed by Sebastián Lelio. It premiered in 2013 at the Berlinale, where Paulina García won the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
In 2020, he produced the series "La Jauría", directed by Lucía Puenzo, along with Fremantle, and "El Presidente", directed by Armando Bó, along Gaumont Distribution and Kapow, both released on Amazon Prime. In 2021 he participated in several projects; "42 Días en la oscuridad", the first Netflix production made in Chile, directed by Claudia Huaiquimilla and Gaspar Antillo.
His company Fabula also has offices in Mexico where they have produced "El Refugio" a science fiction series, directed by Pablo Fendrik, "Señorita 89" directed by Lucía Puenzo; "Midnight Family" released on Apple TV; and "The Dentist" starring Demián Bichir.
