Director Chang Tso Chi graduated from the Cinema & Drama Division of Chinese Culture University's Department of Theatrical Arts. He studied under renowned filmmakers such as Yue Ham Ping, Tsui Hark, Hou Hsiao Hsien, and Yim Ho. Chang's debut film, Midnight Gunshot, was never released in Taiwan due to certain circumstances.
In 1996, his second feature, Ah Chung, centered on the traditional "Bajiajiang" dance and gained international attention for casting non-professional actors in lead roles. In 1999, Darkness & Light, featuring mostly non-professional performers, portrayed the lives of the blind and made a significant impact, setting records at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Chang later created the acclaimed films The Best of Times and Holy Ridge, a television drama series he both produced and directed. Released in 2007, Soul of a Demon tells the story of a young man grappling with family ties and humanity. In 2008, he produced How Are You, Dad? to honor his father's wishes. When Love Comes (2010) set Taiwanese film records, earning 14 nominations and winning four awards, including Best Feature Film at the Golden Horse Film Festival. In 2011, he directed the short historical war film Sparkles and received the National Award for Arts. A Time in Quchi (2013) was nominated at the Festival del film Locarno and received two nominations at the Golden Horse Film Festival. Thanatos, Drunk (2015) won the Siegessäule Readers' Jury Award at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival and garnered ten nominations at the Golden Horse Film Festival, winning Best Supporting Actress, Best New Performer, Best Music, and Best Film Editing. His latest project, The Beloved Stranger, is currently in pre-production.
