Pierre Spengler began his career in 1964 with the film Paris Secret and subsequently worked as an assistant director, assistant editor, and production assistant on notable films such as The Madwoman of Chaillot starring Katharine Hepburn (1968), LE MANS featuring Steve McQueen (1969), and The Light at the Edge of the World starring Kirk Douglas (1970).
He then took on production roles within the Salkind Organisation, eventually overseeing the production of all their films, including the internationally successful The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers, Superman I, Superman II, Superman III, and Santa Claus.
Since 1986, Spengler has operated independently, producing films like The Return of the Musketeers and Underground (which won the Golden Palm at Cannes in 1995). He has also co-produced over 20 films in the United Kingdom, including Unleashed starring Jet Li and Morgan Freeman, Guy Ritchie's REVOLVER featuring Jason Statham, and 7 Seconds starring Wesley Snipes.
In addition to his UK projects, he co-founded the Dutch production company Cadenza Films in 2000. Cadenza has produced Snapshots, Tirza, Suskind, and is currently working on Orestes, an adaptation of Aeschylus’s classic tragedy directed by Rudolf Van den Berg.
Recently, beyond his regular production work, Spengler has been engaged in developing films based on the prestigious Humanoids graphic novel catalog. Upcoming productions include BOUNCER, based on the comic series by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Francois Boucq, directed by Floria Sigismondi; LEGION, inspired by the comic series by Fabien Nury and John Cassaday with a screenplay by Richard Stanley and directed by Nacho Cerda; and a feature film adaptation of The Zombies That Ate the World, to be directed by the Canadian trio RKSS, known from Sundance.
Other projects in development include Sebastian X, currently scripted by Bill Marsilli (Deja Cu) and directed by Martin Campbell (Zorro, Casino Royale), to be produced alongside Gale Ann Hurd (The Walking Dead, Terminator) and Voltage Pictures (The Hurt Locker, Dallas Buyers Club).
At the recent Beijing Film Festival, a co-production agreement was signed between Humanoids and Chinese company Jetavana Capital Co., Ltd., with Pierre Spengler producing a slate of films based on the Humanoids catalog. The initial projects include METAL by Butch Guice, Jerrold Brown, and Paul Alexander, and SEED by Alex Cruz and Marc Riou.
Additional projects in development include an untitled film directed by renowned director Tony Kaye (American History X), TRIPTYCH, a thriller based on a screenplay by Alejandro Jodorowsky and to be directed by Malcolm Venville (44 Inch Chest, Henry’s Crime), and CHELTENHAM, a comedy based on an original screenplay by Piers Ashworth.
Pierre Spengler is married to scientist Tatjana Sauka Spengler, and they have a daughter, Neretva, born in 2008. They reside in Oxford, United Kingdom. From his previous marriage to Agnes L'Helgoualch, he is the father of Oona Spengler, a documentary filmmaker, and Erwan Spengler, a veterinarian.
