Shane Smith is the founder and CEO of VICE, a global youth media brand. Recognized as one of the industry's leading visionaries, Smith is also an acclaimed journalist and serves as the host and executive producer of the Emmy-winning news series VICE on HBO.
Since its inception in 1994 as a punk magazine, VICE has evolved under Smith's leadership into the world’s foremost youth media company. It now operates an international digital channel network, a television production studio, a record label, an in-house creative agency, a book publishing arm, and a feature film division. Recently, VICE launched a new TV network, VICELAND, in partnership with A&E.
VICE produces award-winning video content covering news, culture, music, technology, sports, and fashion from a distinctive viewpoint aimed at young global audiences often overlooked by mainstream media. To distribute its content worldwide, Smith built partnerships with major platforms such as YouTube, Snapchat, Rogers, HBO, 20th Century Fox, and Verizon. As a result, VICE’s channels collectively reach hundreds of millions of viewers each month.
Smith has reported from some of the most remote and challenging locations around the globe, including North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Liberia, and Greenland.
He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the 2014 Knight Innovation Award, two Environmental Media Awards, the Frank Stanton Award for Excellence in Communication, and the LA Press Club Award. VICE itself has garnered numerous honors, such as an Emmy Award for Best Information Series or Special, two Peabody Awards for VICE News, the PEN Center 2014 Award of Honor, and Television Academy Honors for socially conscious programming.
Smith holds a BA in English Literature and Political Science from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
