Born in Barcelona in 1981, Edu Grau is among the youngest members of the American Society of Cinematographers. He is renowned for his versatile and striking style across a diverse range of films such as A Single Man, Buried, The Gift, Suffragette, Boy Erased, The Way Back, and Passing, as well as European art-house films like Honor de Cavalleria and Quién te cantará.
Edu (short for Eduard) studied Cinematography at ESCAC in Barcelona and the NFTS in London before making his debut as a director of photography at age 23 with Honor de Cavalleria, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. In 2008, Tom Ford was impressed by his reel and invited him to the US to shoot his breakthrough film A Single Man. Edu was 27 at the time. This film, hailed by Vice as one of the "30 most beautiful movies of all time," transformed Edu’s career and established him on the global cinematography stage. Since then, he has worked with many top-tier actors and talents, including Nicole Kidman, Ryan Reynolds, Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, Lady Gaga, Ben Affleck, Emily Blunt, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender, Tessa Thompson, Rebecca Hall, David Oyelowo, Joel Edgerton, Charlize Theron, Sam Rockwell, Margot Robbie, Ruth Negga, and Michelle Williams, among others.
His collaborations with directors are equally notable, spanning from art-house auteurs like Albert Serra and Carlos Vermut to visually driven filmmakers such as Tom Ford, Gavin O'Connor, and Sarah Gavron, as well as actors-turned-directors like Joel Edgerton and Rebecca Hall. Throughout his career, Edu has demonstrated remarkable adaptability to each director’s visual language while maintaining a distinct, elegant style that enhances actors’ performances.
Edu Grau received the Bronze Frog at Camerimage in 2011 for his work on Buried and earned nominations for the Goya, Gaudí, and CECC Awards. He was selected for competition at Camerimage for A Single Man, Suffragette, A Single Shot, and Animals. Additionally, he was nominated for both the Goya and Gaudí Awards for Quién te cantará and won the CECC Award in 2019. He balances his work between feature films, TV series, and commercials.
His most recent film, Passing, directed by Rebecca Hall and starring Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, and Alexander Skarsgård, premiered at Sundance in 2021. Netflix acquired the film and plans to release the black-and-white, 4:3 aspect ratio movie during the awards season.
