Brett Butler (born January 30, 1958) is an American actress, writer, and stand-up comedian best known for starring in the comedy series Grace Under Fire.
Born Brett Anderson in Montgomery, Alabama, she is the oldest of five sisters. Before gaining fame as a stand-up comedian, she worked as a cocktail waitress.
One of Butler's early notable appearances was on Dolly Parton's 1987 variety show, Dolly. Parton hired her as a writer for the remainder of the show's season, but the series was canceled after one season due to low ratings.
Butler starred in the ABC sitcom Grace Under Fire from 1993 to 1998. During this period, she struggled with recurring drug addiction and underwent rehab.
In 1996, she published her memoir, Knee Deep in Paradise, which she began before achieving fame. The book candidly covers her life up until the start of Grace Under Fire.
In February 1998, Butler was fired from the show due to erratic behavior related to substance abuse, leading to the series' cancellation by ABC.
After the show's end, Butler left Los Angeles and settled on a farm in Georgia, living with 15 pets. In 2008, she headlined an arts fundraiser and openly discussed her depression, past drug issues, television career, and rural lifestyle. She also expressed a desire to write another book.
In October 2011, Butler appeared on The Rosie Show, revealing she had been sober since 1998. According to a 2011 Hollywood Reporter article, when her finances depleted, she sought shelter at a homeless facility. At that time, she was working on a reality TV show centered on her claimed psychic abilities and performing at the Downtown Comedy Club in Los Angeles.
Starting in June 2012, Butler had a recurring role on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless as the girlfriend of ex-psychiatrist Tim Reid.
She also appeared recurrently as a bartender in the FX series Anger Management, starring Charlie Sheen.
