Miguel Zayas is the Director of Photography, CEO, and Founder of Sentido Común, Inc., and a member of the International Cinematographers Guild since 2009. With over 20 years of experience, he is an award-winning director and filmmaker passionate about storytelling. His talent for translating creative ideas into cinematic language enables him to deliver powerful and visually stunning messages to audiences.
As both director and cinematographer, Zayas filmed and interviewed Lady Gaga during her Live Nation Latin America Tour. He has produced over 200 commercials for clients including Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Medalla, Walmart, Snapple, FedEx, Colgate, Banco Popular, Vitamin Water, AT&T, Nissan, KFC, Bacardí, and Econo Supermarkets, among others. His experience extends to Hollywood projects such as "Contact," "Amistad," and Stephen Hopkins’s "Under Suspicion," where he assisted Director Hopkins and First Assistant Director Cliff Lanning. He also shot press interviews for Warner Brothers’ "Losers" and directed ten mini-episodes for the digital content platform Cinema Gustazos. Zayas is the creator of original projects like Beyond Salsa, Timelapse Project, VIAnimados, Dream Chaser, the 13-episode reality TV show "Jefas" presented by NBC Telemundo, and viral videos including "JetBlue Abuelos" and Victor Manuel’s JetBlue "Aplauso en Clave." In 2015, he earned an Emmy nomination for Director of Photography on a short documentary and won an Emmy for Best Director Live - Recorded Live Broadcast Production for the Atención Atención Live Concert.
Since 2003, Zayas has served as president and owner of the production company sentidocomun.tv, directing and filming major advertising campaigns for Puerto Rico’s leading TV networks. In 2020, Sentido Común won Best Concept among four top advertising agencies for Econo Supermarket’s 50th-anniversary campaign. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, he directed and shot "Wilkins Live" using a cellphone, one of Puerto Rico’s most viewed and shared livestreams. Miguel has produced, directed, and switched live multicamera recordings and livestream concerts for numerous musical acts, including internationally renowned artists such as Yanni Live at El Morro for PBS, Yandel for HBO, Calle 13 Live, Fania All Star, Natalia Jiménez Live from Puerto Rico, Luis Fonsi Live at the Coliseum, Zoe Live in Puerto Rico, Zion y Lennox Live, Tito El Bambino, Jowel y Randy Live, Cultura Profética & Los Cafres Live, Prince Royce & Wisin Live, Día Nacional de la Salsa PR Live, Christine Di'Clario Live, Tego Calderón Live, Fiel a la Vega Live, Pedro Capó, We The Future Festival, Circotic Music Festival, Sonora Ponceña, Vico-C, El Gran Combo de PR, PayPal Don Omar vs. Daddy Yankee Live (5 shows), "Los Cangris" Daddy Yankee & Nicky Jam Live, Atención Atención 360 Live, Electric Holiday with Zedd, Tiësto & Skrillex, Live in Colors Live from Puerto Rico, Nicky Jam, Draco Rosa Sagrado y Maldito, Ozuna at Coliseum 2015 & 2017, Gilberto Santa Rosa for HBO, Kany García for HBO, Farruko for Sony Music, Wisin & Yandel’s comeback "Como Antes" Concert at the Coliseum (9 shows), Bad Bunny X100Pre (3 shows) at the Coliseum, and the historic 12-series Daddy Yankee "Con Calma" concert, presented on YouTube with over 60 million views and three times #1 trending worldwide. He also directed concerts for Tommy Torres, Karol G’s "Bichota" for Sony Music, Eladio Carrión, and Myke Towers. Sentido Común live-streamed Rauw Alejandro’s concert to multiple Caribbean Cinemas theaters, a first in Puerto Rico. He recorded Wisin & Yandel’s 14 historic Coliseum shows and produced the New Year’s Eve 2022-23 live broadcast from the T-Mobile Center featuring five performing artists, closing with Farruko for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve on NBC.
In 2023, alongside various mainstream TV advertising campaigns, he recorded and live-streamed Rauw Alejandro’s Hiram Bithorn concert "Saturno" and Faith Festival Live from National Park El Morro featuring Farruko. He also directed the live broadcast and stream of "Daddy Yankee’s La Meta," a landmark tribute to the artist’s 30-year career featuring all his hits in a historic farewell performance. On December 2, 2023, Miguel Zayas received an Emmy Award for Best Short Documentary TV Special for "West Side Story," a behind-the-scenes look at a unique Puerto Rican adaptation of the play honoring Rita Moreno, aired on NBC Telemundo.
