Born into the world of cinematic innovation, Matthew James "Smalls" Kutcher has built a reputation as one of the industry's premier Special Effects Coordinators with credits on more than 79 major productions across film and television. As the eldest son of Matt Kutcher Sr., founder of Spectrum FX, Matthew continues the family's tradition of excellence while blazing his own trail as a leader in practical special effects, pyrotechnics, and atmospheric work.
From an early age, Matthew was immersed in the craft of practical effects, earning his nickname "Smalls" for his determination and drive alongside towering industry veterans. His expertise spans across blockbuster features and acclaimed series, including Tulsa King (2022-2025), American Primeval (2025), Emancipation (2022), The Walking Dead (2021-2022), Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (2025), Unhinged (2020), The Hunt (2020), Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), True Detective (2014), and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012).
A career milestone came in 2019, when Matthew and his team earned a Visual Effects Society (VES) Award nomination for The First (2018), Episode 108: "Near and Far," a recognition that underscored his technical mastery and ability to elevate storytelling through practical design.
Today, Matthew works alongside his father and brother Zackary to lead Spectrum FX, which now operates from its long-established base in New Orleans and its new brick-and-mortar headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
