Randall Berger grew up in Santa Barbara, California, actively involved with local theatre groups such as Youth Theatre Productions (1967-72) and Alechama Productions (1972). In 1973, driven by wanderlust, he moved to Australia at 19 (his close friend, actor Lance Strauss, had relocated there with his family in 1971). Continuing the path he began in his early teens, Randall pursued professional theatre, particularly musical theatre, appearing in original Australian casts of Broadway and West End shows. He married in 1977 and settled in Melbourne, where he launched a parallel career as a professional writer for radio, multimedia, and advertising, while also taking on extras and minor roles in local TV productions. His first notable film role came in 1983 as a reporter in Phar Lap. As a "portly" American character actor, roles were limited, resulting in only a few appearances annually. Nevertheless, Randall had the chance to work alongside remarkable talents such as James Coburn, Reb Brown, Anthony Hopkins, Ron Leibman, Heather Thomas, Joe Bottoms (a longtime friend from Santa Barbara), Barry Bostwick, John Savage, Steven Berkoff, Art Malik, Noah Taylor, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Laura Branigan, Peter Graves, Paul Hogan, Cuba Gooding Jr., and many notable directors and directors of photography. His most prominent role came later, portraying violinist Isaac Stern in the 1996 film Shine.
