Keith Baxter, born Keith Stanley Baxter-Wright, was a classically trained actor, director, and playwright known for his commanding presence on stage. The son of a Merchant Navy captain, he grew up in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, where he developed an interest in theatre before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1953. He began his career with repertory companies in Oxford and Worthing, making his professional acting debut three years later in a minor role in Noël Coward's play South Sea Bubble at London's Lyric Theatre. Orson Welles then cast him as Hal, Prince of Wales, in the acclaimed play Chimes at Midnight, which premiered at the Grand Opera House in Belfast on February 13, 1960, to positive reviews. Baxter reprised this role five years later in the film adaptation alongside Welles, John Gielgud, and Jeanne Moreau.
In 1962, Baxter earned a Theatre World Award for his Broadway debut as King Henry VIII in A Man for All Seasons. His notable classical roles included Octavius and Marc Antony in separate productions of Antony and Cleopatra. He received a Drama Desk Award in 1971 for his powerful performance as Milo Tindle in Anthony Shaffer's Sleuth, starring opposite Anthony Quayle as Andrew Wyke. Off-Broadway, he portrayed seven different characters in the gothic thriller The Woman in Black. By the mid-1970s, Baxter had begun directing stage productions and was later affiliated with the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. His writing includes the 1987 play Barnaby and the Old Boys and a 1999 memoir, My Sentiments Exactly, which recounts his collaborations and friendships with figures such as Coward, Gielgud, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Taylor, and Richard Burton.
Baxter's film career was relatively limited, largely secondary to his stage work. His first credited film role was as Charles Barrett in The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1957), which also featured Gielgud. He was mainly active on television, appearing in anthology dramas like ITV Play of the Week (1955) and guest-starring sporadically in series such as The Avengers (1961) and Hawaii Five-O (1968). His final screen appearance was a small role as Sir Hector in the 1998 miniseries Merlin, starring Sam Neill and Gielgud.
