Radim Spacek was born in Ostrava in 1973. At the age of five, he moved with his parents to Prague and began acting in minor roles in radio plays and TV dramas. He attended the Prague Conservatory, specializing in acting. Czech director Karel Kachyňa cast him in the lead role of his feature film "Little Girls and Crazy Guys" (_Blazni a devcatka_ (1989)), as well as smaller roles in "Vojtech, Called the Orphan" (_Vojtech, receny sirotek_ (1990)) and the TV film Jan (1992). After graduating in 1991, he worked as a director's assistant on several foreign films shot in Prague, including Swing Kids, Il Giovanni Mussolini, and Catherine Courage. In 1992, he was accepted to study directing at the Prague Film Academy (FAMU).
After completing his first year, he traveled to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, then under siege (1993). There, he filmed his first project, a semi-documentary titled "Young Men Discovering the World" (_Mladí muzi poznávají svet_ (1997)), depicting the wartime experiences of local youth. The film was selected for competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, winning the Film Clubs International Association Award, the Ecumenical Jury Award, and receiving a special mention at the Alpe Adria Festival in Trieste (1996).
Continuing his studies, he spent two years as a presenter and director for Czech TV’s alternative music program, 60 (1996). He completed his education with his second film, "Rapid Eye Movement" (_Rychlé pohyby ocí_ (1998)). Soon after, he received a six-month DAAD scholarship in Berlin, where he wrote the screenplay "Good Intention" (_Dobre umysly_). He also prepared two documentaries: "War Odyssey" (_Valecna odysea_), exploring contemporary conflicts worldwide, and "Sleepless Nights" (_Bezesne noci_), which chronicles the Czech TV crisis during the winter of 2000/2001.
