Deborah Kay Hooker, born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, hails from a family rich in artistic talent. Her grandmother, Pat Hooker, a baton twirling choreographer, invented the thin-shafted baton now standard for majorettes and created the "Dixie Darlings," the pre-Rockettes who debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show. Her grandfather, Vernon Hooker, was a renowned bandmaster who performed with legends like Harry James and John Philip Sousa. Deborah's father was a musician, and her mother, the late Sharon Kay Hinshaw Hooker, was Miss Teen America and an actress. Her aunt, Beth Hooker, is a professional singer/songwriter and actress who has recorded and toured with Don Henley, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Sting, among others. Her brother, Robert Hooker, is an actor who has worked alongside Robert Downey Jr., Michael C. Hall, Sissy Spacek, and Randy Travis. Her cousin, Jonathan George, is a singer/songwriter and owner of JG Entertainment in California and Hollywood Launch in Dallas, Texas.
Deborah Kay naturally draws attention, having started her career young by winning pageants and performing in plays. She studied acting at Schreiner College in Kerrville and was first introduced to film acting at the University of North Texas in Denton, where she was cast in the football comedy "Necessary Roughness." After graduation, she acted in films around Dallas, including "Fatal Deception" starring Helena Bonham Carter, and appeared in multiple episodes of Chuck Norris's "Walker, Texas Ranger." In 1996, she played "Mum" in Sammo Hung's "Once Upon a Time in China and America," starring Jet Li, Jeff Wolfe, and TJ Storm.
After taking several years off to raise her children, Deborah Kay returned to acting with a comedic role in Robert Dahlem's "Hidden in the Heart of Texas," describing the experience as "a hilarious education surrounded by the brilliance of comedians Kurt Basa and Greg Wilson." She recently earned praise for her versatility in the challenging role of June, a cruel and self-centered mother, in B.J. Lewis's "Party Girl." She also appears as Carolanne in Brian Child's award-winning horror film "Hell of a Night" and as Rose in Tyrone M. Turner's "The Unseen."
In summer 2019, Deborah Kay starred as Summer in Jaime Kepner's "Church of Fears." She is currently working on Jeffery Watson's sci-fi film series "Evos Mankind Evolved," portraying Karla. Recently, she accepted the role of Gretchen Van Wolf in the crime thriller "To Avenge," written and directed by Nick Belial, where she will perform alongside Kelli Maroney, Zach Galligan, Erika Eleniak, and Bernard Robichaud.
