Aretha Louise Franklin, the Grammy-winning Queen of Soul and the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to Barbara Vernice (Siggers) and C. L. Franklin, a Baptist minister who preached at Detroit's New Bethel Baptist Church for over thirty years. Known as the man with the "Million-Dollar Voice," her father was one of the most respected ministers in the nation. Aretha grew up singing in church, surrounded by local and national celebrities. She taught herself to play piano by ear, quickly mastering the correct tones and pitches.
At eighteen, Aretha released her first single under Columbia Records, which reached number ten on the Billboard charts. Her debut record came out in January 1961. While with Columbia, she scored two more R&B hits, "Operation Heartbreak" and "Won't Be Long." Throughout the decade, she continued to release pop hits such as "Think," "I Say a Little Prayer," and "Ain't No Way," earning her the title Queen of Soul. In the 1970s, she ventured into gospel music with hits like "Don't Play That Song," "Rocksteady," and "Daydreaming." In 1972, she released "Amazing Grace," which became the best-selling gospel album of all time.
In the mid-1970s, despite releasing successful songs, Franklin began to lose connection with her soul-pop audience as disco gained mainstream popularity. In 1979, she released the album "La Diva" to appeal to disco fans, but it sold fewer than 50,000 copies and marked a low point in her career. On June 10, 1979, her father Clarence was shot by a mugger, resulting in a coma lasting five years. Aretha moved back to Detroit to care for him until his death on July 27, 1984.
In 1980, alongside artists like Ray Charles and James Brown, Aretha appeared in the hit film "The Blues Brothers." She returned to the R&B top ten in 1982 with the album "Jump to It," produced by Luther Vandross, which sold over 600,000 copies and stayed at number one for seven weeks. In 1985, she released "Who's Zoomin' Who?," an album incorporating rock elements, achieving platinum status. It featured the hit duet "I Know You Were Waiting For Me" with George Michael, selling over a million copies. In 1987, she performed the theme song for the sitcom "A Different World," and in 1989, she released the pop album "Through The Storm," collaborating with Elton John, James Brown, The Four Tops, Kenny G, and Whitney Houston. In 1992, she sang "Someday We'll All Be Free" for the "Malcolm X" biopic soundtrack. Aretha also performed at Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993. Throughout the mid-to-late '90s, she continued releasing albums and singles, working with artists such as BabyFace, Jermaine Dupri, Sean "P Diddy" Combs, and Lauryn Hill under Arista Records.
In 2003, Aretha ended her 23-year relationship with Arista and launched her own label, Aretha. She released "A Woman Falling Out of Love" in 2011, marking fifty years in the music industry.
Aretha Franklin passed away from advanced pancreatic cancer on August 16, 2018, in Detroit, Michigan. She is remembered as one of the most influential singers ever and as an activist who used her music as a powerful voice for truth, justice, and soul.
