In 2017, Filipe Valle Costa starred in John Singleton's FX drama series "Snowfall." Premiering in July, "Snowfall" is set during the early days of the L.A. crack cocaine epidemic in 1983. Filipe portrays Pedro Nava, the heir to one of the Mexican crime families trafficking drugs in Los Angeles. Living in his father's shadow, Pedro yearns for his father's attention and approval, willing to do whatever it takes to achieve the American dream. Filipe's recent credits also include appearances on "Blue Bloods," "Gotham," and "Unicornland."
Born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, Filipe dreamed of becoming an actor from an early age. At 17, he told his parents about his desire to move to the United States to pursue acting. They encouraged him to apply for a tennis scholarship to study acting on a student visa. Filipe earned a scholarship to Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. He later attended the University of Florida, obtaining a Master of Fine Arts in Acting. During his first year, he applied for the Diversity Visa Lottery, which grants 50,000 permanent resident visas annually to diversify the U.S. immigrant population. After not hearing back the first year, he applied again in his second year and was selected. Following months of work with an immigration attorney, he received his green card and moved to New York City to pursue acting full-time.
After relocating to NYC, Filipe immersed himself in theater, with credits including Lilia (Rising Circle Theater Collective), Good Grief (Intar), Henry V (The Shakespeare Forum), and End Days (Hippodrome), among others. In 2015, he founded The Saudade Theatre to celebrate and support the Portuguese voice in NYC's arts scene. The company focuses on developing original works rooted in the Portuguese experience and translating Portuguese playwrights. Noticing a lack of awareness about Portuguese theater in the U.S., Filipe took the initiative to create opportunities for fellow Portuguese artists.
Filipe's acting is complemented by his athletic background, developed through years of competitive tennis in Portugal and the U.S., as well as coaching the sport. His other interests include the beach, traveling, music, hiking, soccer, wakeboarding, and spending time with family.
Filipe currently resides in the Los Angeles area, where he recently completed production on "Snowfall.
