Pamella D'Pella was born on August 22, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois, but was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio.
From the age of four, Pamella dreamed of becoming a "movie star," often sitting by the window singing and reciting for people passing by.
As a child, she overheard her mother’s voice teacher telling her mother that Pamella was tone-deaf and would never be able to hold a note. Because of this, from age 9 through graduate school, she avoided musicals and any activities that involved singing.
She was a cheerleader from seventh grade through college. While cheering for the University of Cincinnati, she turned professional, becoming a Ben-Gal for the Cincinnati Bengals for two years. She broke barriers as one of the first Black cheerleaders at Mt. Healthy High School and with the Bengals.
During her teenage years, Pamella was very active as an athlete, cheerleader, and actor. At 16, she was crowned Ms. NAACP and became the first Black "Cincinnati Junior Miss." She went on to win "Junior Miss Ohio Physical Fitness," placed second in talent, and fourth in the state. Not satisfied with fourth place, she later earned the titles "Miss Aerospace" and "Miss Hemisphere."
In high school, the International Thespian Society recognized Pamella with Certificates of Recognition for excellence in movement and characterization and awarded her a Meritorious Participation in Theatre Arts for her role as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz." Her acting journey began with the school play "Peter Pan," where she auditioned for the dog but landed the lead role. Proud of her role as Peter, she nicknamed herself "Peter Pam!" Alongside acting, she excelled academically and athletically, earning a college scholarship through the national writing contest "What's Right About America."
As a theatre major, she performed in numerous productions, receiving standing ovations for her role as the Dark Queen in "Snow White," and earning praise for her performance in David Mamet's "Sexual Perversity in Chicago."
Determined to advance her craft, Pamella moved from Cincinnati to attend The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She was granted permission to live at the United States International House, housing reserved for postgraduate international students and American students with high academic and social achievements. In New York, she studied intensively—acting at the Academy, dance at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, and writing at the Frank Silvera Workshop.
