Originally from Georgia and currently based in Chicago, Matthew has performed with many of the premier theaters in the "Windy City" as well as several leading Regional Theaters across the United States. Since 2001, he has been an ensemble member of Chicago's American Blues Theatre Company, boasting fifteen production credits including Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Oklahoma, A View from the Bridge, Catch 22, Tobacco Road, True West, and The Hairy Ape. His other Chicago credits include Frost/Nixon (TimeLine Theatre), Carousel and Titus Andronicus (Court Theatre), Another Part of the Forest and Loot (Writers' Theatre), She Stoops to Conquer (Northlight Theatre), The Winning Streak (Apple Tree Theatre), Mary Zimmerman's Eleven Rooms of Proust (About Face Theatre/Lookingglass Theatre), and five productions with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Additional Chicago work includes performances with Goodman Theatre, Shakespeare on the Green, PROP, Chicago Dramatists, Organic/Touchstone, Aardvark Collective, Azusa Productions, and Poetry Onstage with Bernie Sahlens.
Regionally, Matthew's credits encompass Nobody Lonesome For Me (Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and American Heartland Theatre, KC), In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play (Actors Theatre of Louisville and Milwaukee Repertory Theatre), Lombardi and A Few Good Men (Peninsula Players Theatre), The Borderland (Kansas City Repertory Theatre), Carousel (Long Wharf Theatre), and six productions with Montana Shakespeare In The Parks, where he portrayed roles such as Tartuffe, Orlando, and Shylock. He toured nationally with Montana Repertory Theatre in A Streetcar Named Desire as Stanley, and appeared in The Comedy of Errors (Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival), She Stoops To Conquer and The Comedy of Errors (Door Shakespeare). Over six seasons of A Christmas Carol, he played Young Scrooge, Fred, and Cratchit. Other notable roles include William Gillette in The Games Afoot, Harry Nash in Who Am I This Time?, Hannay in The 39 Steps, Dr. John Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles, and the title role in Hamlet (Indiana Repertory Theatre).
Matthew has starred in the independent feature films Blur Circle, Of Minor Prophets, Endings, and Where We Started, the latter recently screened in Los Angeles and New York City. He has earned a Broadway World Chicago Award nomination for Principal Actor and three Equity Jeff Award nominations for his Chicago stage work. Most notably, he won the 2014 Equity Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Principal Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Hank Williams Sr., which the Chicago Tribune praised as "the best work of Brumlow's long career." The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recognized Nobody Lonesome for Me—a solo show about country music legend Hank Williams Sr.—as one of the "Top Solo Theatre Productions of 2011."
Matthew graduated Summa Cum Laude from Lee University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and received the 1996 F.J. Lee Award, the university's highest honor presented annually to a single graduate. He also holds a Master's Degree in Theatre from Northwestern University. A proud member of Actors Equity Association, Matthew is represented by Chicago's Big Mouth Talent.
