Alfonso "Poncho" Pineda Ulloa is a meticulous, inventive, and adaptable film and TV director renowned for his compelling storytelling, expert actor guidance, and precise camera techniques. His ability to work across various styles showcases his command of the craft. Poncho earned an MFA from UCLA's Producers Program and holds a degree in English literature. He also studied cinematography and directing at LAFS and gained experience shadowing Rodrigo García on Nine Lives and HBO's Big Love through IFP's "Project Involve."
Poncho Pineda's latest TV series, WOMEN IN BLUE, a true crime drama on Apple TV+, premiered on July 31 to critical acclaim, achieving a perfect 100% Critics Score on Rotten Tomatoes and winning over audiences. In television, he directed WHO KILLED SARA? (¿Quién Mató a Sara?), which became Netflix's #1 show, watched by 54 million subscribers. He has received three International Emmy nominations. His HBO series SR. AVILA won an International Emmy in 2017. That same year, his acclaimed series HASTA QUE TE CONOCI, about legendary Mexican singer Juan Gabriel, was also nominated for an International Emmy. He also directed THE INMATE (EL RECLUSO), produced by Telemundo for Netflix, which earned an International Emmy nomination in 2019.
His feature debut, LOVE PAIN AND VICE VERSA (Amor Dolor y Viceversa), competed in the narrative feature category at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. His English-language action thriller THERE ARE NO SAINTS, described as "a badass exploitation film with a black soul, shot from the hip," written by Paul Schrader and starring José María Yazpik, Ron Perlman, Tim Roth, Neal McDonough, and Karla Souza, is available on VOD and AMC+ and has become a cult favorite among American audiences. He also directed TALES OF MEXICO (La habitación), which received seven Ariel Award nominations, often considered the Mexican Oscars.
