Sarah Churchill was a British actress and dancer of American heritage, born in London in 1914. She was the third child and second daughter of politician Winston Churchill (1874–1965) and Clementine Ogilvy Hozier (1885–1977). Her father later served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1940–1945, 1951–1955), and her mother was made a life peer as Baroness Spencer-Churchill. Sarah was named after her distant ancestor Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1660–1744), a significant figure in British political history known for her close friendship with Queen Anne and her influence within the Whig party.
Sarah came from a well-connected but somewhat controversial British noble lineage. Her paternal grandfather, Lord Randolph Churchill (1849–1895), was a prominent Conservative politician and cabinet member under Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury. Randolph's career ended prematurely due to political missteps, and he died of syphilis in 1895. Her paternal grandmother, Jennie Jerome (1854–1921), was a wealthy American heiress from Brooklyn noted for her extramarital affairs, including one with the future King Edward VII. Jennie died following an accident that resulted in a gangrene infection.
On her mother's side, Sarah's grandmother was Lady Blanche Ogilvy (1852–1925), daughter of an Earl of Airlie, known for her scandalous personal life and a high-profile divorce from military officer Henry Montague Hozier. While Hozier was legally Clementine Churchill's father, there has been speculation that her biological father was either equestrian George "Bay" Middleton or diplomat Algernon Freeman-Mitford, 1st Baron Redesdale.
Sarah was educated at Notting Hill High School in London and later attended North Foreland Lodge, a boarding school in Kent. In 1936, at 22, she married Vic Oliver (1898–1964), an Austrian-Jewish actor and comedian, against her parents' wishes.
During the 1930s, Sarah pursued a career in acting, beginning with a minor role in the 1937 comedy "Who's Your Lady Friend?" She gained more substantial parts in films such as the musical "He Found a Star" (1941), the historical drama "Daniele Cortis" (1947), and the comedy "All Over the Town" (1949), which tackled themes of workplace rivalries and labor disputes.
Her most notable role was as dancer Anne Ashmond in the 1951 film "Royal Wedding," where she starred alongside Fred Astaire. This role brought her recognition in both the UK and the US, leading to offers in theater, radio, and television. However, her career was later hindered by struggles with alcoholism, resulting in several arrests for drunken and disorderly conduct and imprisonment at HM Prison Holloway.
In the late 1950s, Sarah began producing lithographic prints as a side career. During the 1970s, she collaborated with other artists on the project "A Visual Philosophy of Sir Winston Churchill," creating portraits of her father.
Sarah Churchill passed away in September 1982, just two weeks before her 68th birthday. She was interred in the family grave at St Martin's Church, Bladon, Oxfordshire, alongside her parents and three siblings. The church has been associated with the Spencer-Churchill family since 1804, when her ancestor George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough, funded its construction.
