Russell Arthur Benson Jr. was born to Cynthia Lattof and Russell Benson Sr., a union plumber and Vietnam veteran. Cynthia, a student at Gloucester State College, and Russell Sr. divorced in 1979. Cynthia relocated with Russell and his infant brother to Sacramento, California, where she met Frank Russo, who later adopted the boys, changing Russell Jr.'s name to Russell Austin Russo. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, before embarking on a cross-country trip in December 1982 to Long Branch, New Jersey, where Frank's family resided. They rented homes and duplexes while having three more children. In April 1992, the Russo family relocated to Rumson, New Jersey. Russ completed his senior year at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, graduating in 1994.
In June 1996, he moved to Clearwater, Florida, with his longtime girlfriend Laura Wood, but the relationship ended, and in November 1997, he returned to Rumson, New Jersey. Russ studied business-finance at Brookdale College. In February 1999, he discovered the Jewelbox Theatre, where director Jade Greene offered acting internships. Over the following months, he trained in Alexander, Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Method acting techniques. Russ worked as a utility actor in various productions before securing a lead role as Moe Axelrod in Clifford Odets' classic "Awake & Sing," a role once played by Sanford Meisner. He began traveling to New York City to attend acting workshops at Tisch and collaborated with the New Jersey Theatre Exchange.
In March 2002, Russ earned the lead role in the independent film "Envy," portraying a character with multiple personality disorder. The film won the Buzz Award at the New York Independent Film Festival. Russ continues to perform in various stage productions and films.
