Sir David Hare is a British playwright, screenwriter, and director for theatre and film. Renowned primarily for his stage work, Hare also achieved significant success in cinema, earning two Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay: for The Hours (2002), adapted from Michael Cunningham's novel, and The Reader (2008), based on Bernhard Schlink's book of the same name.
His most notable West End successes include Plenty, later adapted into a 1985 film starring Meryl Streep, Racing Demon (1990), Skylight (1997), and Amy's View (1998). These four plays were also staged on Broadway between 1982 and 1999, garnering Hare three Tony Award nominations for Best Play for the first three, along with two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best New Play. Additional significant stage works include A Map of the World, Pravda, Murmuring Judges, The Absence of War, and The Vertical Hour. His screenwriting credits encompass films such as The Hours (2002) and The Reader (2008), as well as BBC dramas like Page Eight (2011) and Collateral (2018).
As of 2013, Hare had received two Academy Award nominations, three Golden Globe nominations, three Tony nominations, a BAFTA Award, a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and two Laurence Olivier Awards. He has also earned several critics' awards, including the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and won the Golden Bear in 1985. He was knighted in 1998.
