Michael Lawrence achieved his first major success as Executive Producer/Producer with Australia's top-grossing documentary Bra Boys (2007), collaborating with Russell Crowe. He then produced the character-driven, multi-AACTA award-winning feature documentary Fighting Fear (2011), working alongside Joel Edgerton. This led to a spin-off TV series, The Crew (2013–2015), commissioned by Fox Sports and The Nine Network, which ran for three full seasons totaling 36 episodes and was sold in over 35 countries.
Lawrence also created, executive produced, and produced several story-driven documentaries including Missing (2013), You & Me (2016), and Proximity (2017). During this period, he co-founded Garage Entertainment with longtime business partner Nicholas Cook. Garage Entertainment grew into the world’s largest distributor of Action Adventure content, operating its own SVOD platform and linear TV channel, and was successfully sold in 2015 for an undisclosed sum.
In 2016, Lawrence partnered with Peter Berg and Film 45 to executive produce the factual TV series Uncensored with Michael Ware (2017) for National Geographic, which aired in 170 countries and 30 languages.
Between 2016 and 2021, Lawrence produced numerous film and TV projects including Save This Shark, featuring World Surfing Champion Mick Fanning, which received nominations at the Newport Beach Film Festival and Oceanside International Film Festival; Save This Rhino, starring former English Cricket Captain Kevin Pietersen, which won the Monolith Award and Lumiere Awards; Save This Rhino - India, also starring Pietersen, which earned the Asian Academy Creative Awards for Best Natural History and Wildlife Show and Best Current Affairs Program; as well as MuM (Misunderstandings of Miscarriage) and Here For The Horses.
In 2022, Lawrence was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Mini Series for the TV drama Barons (8 episodes), produced in collaboration with FremantleMedia and the ABC. In 2024, he is set to premiere the feature documentary Skategoat at the Sydney Film Festival and is developing several factual and drama-based projects.
