Born in London in 1929, Stirling Moss inherited his passion for auto racing from his family—his father, a dentist, had been a race car driver who competed at Indianapolis in 1924 and 1925. Fascinated by cars from a young age, Moss began racing seriously at 17. Two years later, he secured fourth place overall and first in his class driving a Cooper Formula 3 at the renowned Bugatti Owner's Club Hill Climb. By the end of that year, he had won six additional races. Moss soon transitioned to sports car racing, where he gained his greatest renown. Throughout the 1950s, he triumphed in nearly every major auto race except Le Mans. When the World Driving Championship circuit was established in 1950, Moss was widely expected to win, but Argentine driver Juan Manuel Fangio claimed the title. Moss found consolation in victories at the British, New Zealand, Monaco, Moroccan, and Italian Grands Prix. His 1961 Monaco Grand Prix win is often regarded as his finest achievement. Driving a Lotus-Climax—a car significantly underpowered compared to the fierce Ferraris—he skillfully overtook the competition and finished just 3.6 seconds ahead.
In 1962, Moss suffered a severe crash while racing at Goodwood, England. He remained in a coma for some time, and upon awakening, he faced partial paralysis on his left side and greatly slowed reaction times. Despite this, after several months of recovery, he was determined to race again. On May 1, 1963, Moss returned to Goodwood, the site of his near-fatal accident, and completed several laps. After stopping, he exited the car and declared, "I am retiring." He recognized that his physical condition and reflexes were no longer what they once were, and instead of relying on instinctive reactions honed by experience, he would have to consciously think through every move—a prospect he found unacceptable. Consequently, he left the sport he loved and had dedicated his life to; if he could no longer be the best, he chose not to compete at all.
