He began performing in high school and went on to appear in over 120 hours of television and fourteen feature films, including Fred Schepisi's The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), John Duigan's Mouth to Mouth (1978), Tom Jeffrey's The Odd Angry Shot (1979), Dusan Makavejev's The Coca-Cola Kid (1985), Fred Schepisi's Evil Angels ("A Cry in the Dark"), and Bill Bennett's Malpractice. Transitioning to directing, he was chosen from more than a thousand applicants to attend the Australian Film Television and Radio School, specializing in Screen Direction. After completing his diploma, he immediately began pre-production on the AFC/PBL telefeature Double Sculls with producer Richard Brennan. Since then, he has directed the miniseries Snowy and Bordertown, as well as the multi-award-winning series Phoenix and Water Rats. In 1992, he served as the set-up director for PRO Films / Fremantle Corporation's Black Beauty, which received The International TV Programmers' Award at the 1994 New York Festival. He later directed the pilot for Newlyweds, which ran for four seasons, and worked on the first season of Ben Gannon and Michael Jenkins' European hit Heartbreak High. His subsequent projects included Tales of the South Seas, a UFA, Gaumont Television, and Village Roadshow production produced by Darryl Sheen, and Flipper for Tribune Entertainment, Samuel Goldwyn Television, and Village Roadshow. He directed the Paramount telemovie Code Red (2001) and the series BeastMaster (1999) for Alliance Atlantis with Coote Hayes, as well as The Lost World (1999) for Telescene Film Group and Coote Hayes. In 2002, he directed the three-hour miniseries Bootleg for the BBC and Burberry Productions. Bootleg won the BAFTA for Best Children's Drama and went on to receive Logie and ATOM awards. He later directed three episodes of the multi-award-winning Australian Children's Television Foundation series Mortified and two Movies of the Week for the Sci Fi Network.
