Neena Kulkarni is an actress, columnist, producer, and director from Mumbai. She completed her schooling at Canossa Convent High School in Mahim and pursued higher education at Elphinstone College. Neena began her acting career in the 1970s on the Marathi professional stage and Hindi experimental theatre, while also participating in fashion shows and modeling. She was mentored by Pt. Satyadev Dubey, under whose direction she performed in several Hindi productions. Notable plays include Mohan Rakesh's Adhe Adhure, Shankar Shesh's Mayavi Sarovar, and Willie Russell's Educating Rita.
In 1978, Dr. Vijaya Mehta cast her as Shabbo in Anil Barve's Hamidabai Chi Kothi, marking the start of her enduring association with Marathi theatre alongside Bai in productions like Mahasagar and Savitri. She continues to support Bai by assisting in her workshops.
Neena has acted in and directed acclaimed Marathi plays such as Mahasagar, Akasmat, Dhyani Mani, Vatvat Savitri, Dehabhaan, Prem Patra, Hamidabai Chi Kothi, and Chapa Kaata. Her English theatre roles include Mahatma Versus Gandhi and Wedding Album.
Her distinguished Marathi films include Savat Maazhi Laadki, which earned her the State Award for Best Actress, Aai, Uttaryan, and Shevri, the latter of which won her the National Award and the PIFF Award as a producer. She also received the State Award for Best Supporting Actress for Sari Var Sari and the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Bioscope.
Currently, her television show Yeh Hai Mohabbatein is in its fourth year. Internationally, Neena appeared in the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and starred in Rani, an eight-part French series broadcast on France Deux.
