Christopher Cleveland was born in Los Angeles and raised in Watts, where his mother, a political activist and Panthers supporter, frequently hosted Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver.
He studied film at the Art Center College of Design before selling his first script, which became Oliver Stone's NIXON. He has written nearly 35 film and television scripts for major studios and networks. His accolades include the Humanitas Prize, Black Reelz Award, Movieguide Award, two NAACP Awards, and thirteen Emmy nominations in 2015 for BESSIE, starring Queen Latifah. Christopher received a nomination for best teleplay. BESSIE won four Emmys, including Best Television Movie.
He has collaborated with Oscar-winning artists such as Michael Mann (twice), Robert De Niro, Robert Zemeckis, Denzel Washington, Barbra Streisand, Norman Jewison, Taylor Hackford, Oliver Stone, Martin Campbell, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Bryan Singer, William Friedkin, Dee Rees, and Jerry Bruckheimer. His recent work includes JOAQUIN MURRIETA, featuring John Malkovich, Milo Ventimiglia, Isabelle Huppert, Diego Luna, James Gandolfini, Richard and Lili Zanuck, and John Travolta. His film credits also include Jerry Bruckheimer's GLORY ROAD, THE HURRICANE (for which Denzel Washington won a Golden Globe), and McFARLAND, USA, starring Kevin Costner (2015), which received major awards at the Heartland Film Festival, the Imagen Foundation Best Picture Award, the Cesar Chavez Legacy Award, and several nominations including the NAACP Image Award.
Christopher recently completed REBUILDING ROME for producer John Lawrence and CONQUISTADOR, starring Christian Bale and produced by Avenue Pictures.
He also finished the screenplay MURRIETA, based on the true story of Joaquin Murrieta—the inspiration for Zorro—for producer Todd Myers of 1919 Productions, Inc.
His television work includes BOONE, a History Channel miniseries produced by Joel Surnow, and KING OF THIEVES, produced by Matt Baer, Christopher Cleveland, and Kelly Rauch Cleveland, which has just been completed.
