Mariya Vladimirova Rusalieva was a Bulgarian theater and film actress, born on July 21, 1928, in Sofia, Bulgaria. She graduated from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Art in Sofia in 1953, studying under Professor Filip Filipov. Immediately after graduation, she joined the Bulgarian Army Theater troupe, making her debut in the Georgian play "Scorcher." Rusalieva remained with the Bulgarian Army Theater until her retirement in 1990.
She also appeared in films, with notable works including "Knight without Armour" (1966), Bulgaria's first soap opera "Family Kalinkov" (1966), "Lyubimetz 13," and "La donna è mobile" (1993). Known for her rich voice, she was invited to perform dubbing work at Radio Sofia and later on television. In 2004, she was nominated for the Union of Bulgarian Actors' Award "Icarus" for "Golden Voice" in the dubbing cycle of Shakespeare's plays. In 2007, she received the Dub Art Lifetime Achievement Award.
One of Bulgaria’s most iconic actresses, Rusalieva was celebrated for her ability to radiate positivity to those around her. She embraced her years with the smile of a child experiencing her first victory in life. Rusalieva was married four times and divorced four times. Her first husband was renowned Bulgarian cinematographer Dimo Kolarov, followed by radio speaker Alexander Alexandrov, then Gabriel Markov. Her last husband, Bob, was an electrician at the Bulgarian Army Theater. She had one daughter, Elena Rusalieva, who is also an actress, and a grandson named Martin. Mariya Rusalieva passed away on August 5, 2015, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
