Harley Kaplan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and relocated to the United States as a child, growing up in Columbus, Ohio. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he moved to New York City and began his career as a production trainee at Fox Television. Through various jobs, including a role as a corporate floater for New Line Cinema, Harley pursued extensive acting studies—first under Sandy Dennis, then at the New School/Actors Studio and Chicago City Limits. He transitioned from Off-off Broadway to Off-Broadway theater productions before securing roles in film and television.
Harley co-founded Powers/Kaplan Casting, a bi-coastal casting company specializing in independent film. Recent and upcoming projects include This is Not a War Story, The Last Time I Saw You Blessed, The Glass Cage, Empathy Inc, Buck Run, Benji The Dove, New Money, Noble Earth, Swing Away, One Penny, the web series All Hail Beth, and television pilots Bennie's, In Reality, and Couch Crashers. He began his casting career at the renowned Hopkins/Smith/Barden office, working as a casting assistant on films like Boys Don't Cry, The Cider House Rules, Simply Irresistible, and HBO's Sex In The City. Later, he served as an associate for PalmStar and S2 Entertainment on films such as Jack and Diane, For Ellen, Gun Hill Road, Union Square, Silver Tongues, and The Girl Is In Trouble. Since establishing Powers/Kaplan in 2010, Harley has cast the award-winning Blue Ruin and The Comedy, along with Mamarosh, The Sector, The Tell-Tale Heart, Google's The Review Review, and campaigns for Sony, Random House, PSE&G, AncestryDNA, Keio University, Yeshiva University, EF Language Schools, Carolina Herrera, and Puristics. In addition, Harley has written and produced short films and executive-produced features including Buck Run, Death4told, and Temptation.
