Lance Johnson was born on February 10, 1982, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Roger and Kathy Johnson. He attended St. Olaf Catholic School in Bountiful, Utah, for elementary education. During this time, he participated in the Theatre School For Youth program offered by the University of Utah's Department of Continuing Education. His involvement led to an invitation to audition for the film Little Heroes, where he was cast as Fritz, making his film debut in third grade. Lance continued his participation in the Theatre School, appearing in numerous stage productions. He completed high school at Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City, graduating as Salutatorian.
After high school, Lance enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in a dual degree program studying Film and Finance. While there, he founded and served as executive producer of the university's first student-run television show, NDTV: Notre Dame Television. He graduated with highest honors in 2004.
