Salah-Eddine Chihani (sometimes credited as Salah Chihani) is an Algerian screenwriter and director. He is known for writing historical and dramatic works that explore key moments of Algeria’s past for cinema and television.
He gained wider recognition as the writer of the historical feature film Héliopolis (2021), directed by Djaffar Gacem. The film depicts the events surrounding the massacres of Sétif, Guelma and Kherrata on May 8, 1945, a turning point in Algeria’s struggle for independence. The film was selected as Algeria’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
Alongside his work in cinema, Chihani has also written for television like the Algerian TV series Dar Lefchouch (2023) and Fatma, broadcast during Ramadan 2026.
His writing often focuses on characters confronted with major historical or social transformations, exploring how political events and cultural tensions affect personal destinies. Through his screenplays, he contributes to a growing body of Algerian audiovisual works that revisit the country’s history and collective memory.
